USE SER FOR:
I. Ser + "de" expresses origin (where something/someone is from),possession,
or material from which something is made.
- Juan es de Venezuela.
(Origin)
(John is from Venezuela.)
- Los lápices son de María.
(Possession) (The pencils are
Mary's.)
- El escritorio es de madera.
(Material) (The desk is [made] of
wood)
2. Ser is used in descriptions or characteristics of a person or thing:
- La casa es
grande.
The house is large.
- Ella es
rubia.
She is blonde.
- La blusa es
azul.
The blouse is blue.
- Ellos son
jóvenes.
They are young.
- Las muchachas son rusas. The
girls are Russian.
3. Ser is used in telling time or expressing dates:
- ¿Qué hora
es? Son las
ocho.
What time is it? It's eight o'
clock.
- ¿Qué día es hoy?
Hoy es el diez de abril. What's
today? It's the tenth of
April.
4. Ser indicates a profession or familial relationships.
- Luis es
médico.
Louis is a doctor.
- Miguel es el yerno de
Juan. Mike is John's
son-in-law.
5. Ser is used for impersonal expressions.
- Es
lástima. It's a
pity.
Es fácil.
It's easy.
- Es
verdad. It's the
truth.
Es difícil. It's
difficult,hard.
- Es
necesario. It's
necessary.
Es bastante. It's
enough.
- Es
tarde. It's
late.
Es temprano. It's early.
- Es

lot.
